This Week On The Health Hub…Functions of Mast Cells with Dr. Lawrence Afrin

After training at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Dr. Afrin practiced and researched hematology/oncology at MUSC 1995-2014 while also working in educational administration and medical informatics.  Since the mid-’00s, his clinical/research work has come to focus in mast cell disease.  Since 2014-17 furthering this work at the University of Minnesota, he has been developing an independent institute (located in the greater New York City area) for advancing care, research, and education in mast cell disease.  His publication record includes some of the most highly accessed articles about mast cell activation syndrome and a popular book in the field.

This Week On The Health Hub…Plant-Based Diets & Peak Athletic Performance With Dr. Andrew Chen

Andrew L. Chen, MD, MS, a native of Maryland, earned a Masters of Science in Biomatierals Engineering at The Johns Hopkins University and a doctorate in medicine at The John Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.  He completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York where he also completed a fellowship in orthopaedic research at the Musculoskeletal Research Center in New York.  Following this, he completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Steadman-Hawkins Sports Medicine Clinic in Vail, Colorado.  Dr. Chen practices at The Alpine Clinic in Franconia, New Hampshire, and is certified in Orthopaedic Surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, with subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine.  Dr. Chen is the Chief Medical Officer for United States Nordic Sport, a Team Physician for the United States Olympic Committee, and a Team Physician for the United States Ski and Snowboard Association.  Dr. Chen is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine.  In addition to numerous published articles, book chapters, and books, Dr. Chen has presented research numerous international, national, and regional forums, and has been featured on WMUR’s New Hampshire Chronicle, several television interviews and presentations, and radio interviews nationwide. He has assisted in the care of several professional sports teams, and was a physician for Madison Square Garden in New York City.  Dr. Chen currently resides in New Hampshire with his wife, a specialist in Plant Based Nutrition, and his two teenage children.

A pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, James M. Greenblatt, MD, has treated patients since 1988. After receiving his medical degree and completing his psychiatry residency at George Washington University, Dr. Greenblatt completed a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Medical School. He currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer at Walden Behavioral Care in Waltham, MA and serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine and Dartmouth College Geisel School of Medicine. Dr. Greenblatt has lectured internationally on the scientific evidence for nutritional interventions in psychiatry and mental illness.  He is the author of seven books, including Finally Focused: The Breakthrough Natural Treatment Plan for ADHD. He is the founder of Psychiatry Redefined, an educational platform dedicated to the transformation of psychiatry, which offers online CME-approved courses, webinars, and fellowships for professionals about functional and integrative medicine for mental illness.

EMDR: A Novel Approach For Treating Trauma with Dr. Steven Dansiger

Dr. Steven Dansiger is a rocker who got sober in the late 80’s and then became a sought after clinician, writer and meditation teacher. He became a master EMDR therapist and provider of EMDR Basic Training and Advanced Topics Courses as Senior Faculty with the Institute for Creative Mindfulness. He is the creator and founder of the MET(T)A Protocol (Mindfulness and EMDR Treatment Template for Agencies), a design for addictions and mental health agency treatment using Buddhist Mindfulness and EMDR Therapy as the theoretical orientation and primary clinical practice. It is now in use in multiple agencies throughout the country. He has been practicing Buddhist mindfulness for over 30 years (including a one year residency at a Zen monastery), and teaches dharma classes in Los Angeles and other centers internationally. He is the author of Clinical Dharma: A Path for Healers and Helpers and Mindfulness for Anger Management: Transformative Skills for Overcoming Anger and Managing Powerful Emotions.  He is also the co-author (with Jamie Marich) of EMDR Therapy and Mindfulness for Trauma-Focused Care. Additionally, Dr. Dansiger is the coauthor of Trauma and the 12 Steps: A Trauma Responsive Workbook & Trauma and the 12 Steps: Daily Meditations & Reflections – both companion pieces to the newly updated Trauma & The 12 Steps by Dr. Jamie Marich. He avidly blogs and podcasts on topics related to mental health, recovery, and mindfulness. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a fairly new, nontraditional type of psychotherapy. It’s growing in popularity, particularly for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
