Aube Giroux is an award winning documentary film maker, organic gardener and food blogger. Aube is the creator of “Kitchen Vignettes”, an online farm-to-table cooking show on PBS which received the 2012 Saveur Magazine Best Food Blog award and is a two-time James Beard award nominee. Aube holds an MFA in Film Production from York University. “Modified” is her first feature length documentary and tells the story of the Aube and her mother, whose shared love of food leads them to embark upon a deeply personal investigation into the world of genetically modified foods (GMOs), questioning why Canada does not label GMOs on food products. Two years into the film’s production, Aube’s mom was diagnosed with a brain tumour. After her mother’s death, Aube struggled to finish the film, which ultimately became a tribute to her mother who was inspiration.
Modified interweaves the personal and the political, featuring public figures like Dr. Jane Goodall and Senator Bernie Sanders. The film has received 13 festival awards and has been an official selection at over 60 international film festivals.
Learning Points:
- Why was Aube so passionate about making this film?
- How and why are agribusinesses and large corporation involved in the issue of labelling GMO foods?
- Where do we stand now, in Canada, with respect to GMO food labelling?
