This Week on The Health Hub…Why Do We Sleep? with Dr. Edgar Garcia-Rill

Dr. Edgar Garcia-Rill is Director of the Center for Translational Neuroscience, a NIH-funded Center of Biomedical Research Excellence, a Professor of Neurobiology and Developmental Sciences, and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He earned his Ph.D. from McGill University in Montreal in 1973. After postdoctoral training at the Department of Anatomy at the University of California at Los Angeles and the Neuropsychiatric Institute at UCLA he joined the faculty at UAMS in 1978.  Dr. Garcia-Rill has been continuously funded for his research for almost 40 years.  His interests include the control of voluntary movement and locomotion, which involves the study of spinal cord injury as well as motor disorders like Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases.  He does research on the control of arousal and sleep-wake cycles, recently describing a novel mechanism for sleep-wake control, outlined in his 2015 book, “Waking and the Reticular Activating System in Health and Disease”.

He is the co-inventor on six patents and collaborates with Law School faculty on a series of six law reviews generally entitled, “The Law and the Brain: Using science to make legal decisions”.  Dr. Garcia-Rill has served on NIH review panels for 30 years, and was on the Board of Scientific Councilors for the National Institute for Drug Abuse and the National Center for Rehabilitation Research.

This Week on The Health Hub…Beating Back the Cultural Bias of Ageism with Ashton Applewhite

Author and activist Ashton Applewhite is the author of “This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism”. In 2016, she joined PBS site Next Avenue’s annual list of 50 Influencers in Aging as their Influencer of the Year and Lifetime Arts recently awarded her their 2018 Game Changer Award. Ashton has been recognized by the New York Times, the New Yorker, National Public Radio, and the American Society on Aging as an expert on ageism. She blogs at This Chair Rocks, has written for Harper’s, Playboy, and the New York Times, and is the voice of ‘Yo, Is This Ageist?’.  Ashton speaks widely, at venues that have ranged from universities and community centers to the TED mainstage and the United Nations. She is a leading spokesperson for a movement to mobilize against discrimination on the basis of age.

The Upside of Estrogen

Although we tend to defer to women when speaking of it, estrogen’s importance and functions extend to men as well.

But many of us have a limited understanding of estrogen.  In fact, as someone who has had an estrogen positive breast cancer, it was an easy jump for me to arrive at the incorrect conclusion that estrogen had no benefit for me and at all and was only detrimental for my best health.

So I want to take some space here to look at important functions of estrogen to broaden the concept that it is responsible only for the development of female secondary sexual characteristics and estrogen dominant conditions such as Endometriosis, PMS and breast cancer.

In women estrogen is produced in the ovaries, adrenal glands and fat tissue.  It circulates through the blood stream and locks on to estrogen receptors located throughout the body including the breasts, uterus, brain, bone, liver and heart. The mere fact that there are so many receptors throughout the body for estrogen underscores its importance.

In men, estrogen is produced through an enzymatic process in which the enzyme aromatase transforms testosterone into estrodial.  For men, it is important that a proper balance between estrogen and testosterone is maintained for prostate health as men with higher blood levels of estrogen may be at a higher risk for enlarged prostate or prostate cancer.

So let’s take a look at some key beneficial roles that estrogen plays.

Heart Health

Estrogen increases the ‘good’ cholesterol, HDL and decreases the ‘bad’ cholesterol, LDL. Estrogen has a positive effect on the inner layer of artery walls, helping to keep blood vessels flexible and estrogen dilates blood vessels to aid increased blood flow.

 

 

Bone Health

Estrogen is extremely important for bone health. It helps the bones to retain calcium as well as other important minerals needed to keep bones strong. Estrogen reduces bone resorption, the breakdown of bone, and increases bone formation.

Insulin Resistance

A critical role of estrogen is to optimize the action of another hormone, insulin. Insulin regulates bloodsugar levels. Low levels of estrogen can lead to increased insulin resistance.

Vaginal Dryness

Estrogen helps to keep the tissue of the vagina healthy and lubricated. Estrogen helps to prevent vaginal thinning and dryness.

Estrogen and skin

Estrogen is important for healthy skin. It helps our skin to retain collagen, increase skin thickness and improve blood supply to the skin.

This Week on The Health Hub…Ageing with Health & Gratitude with Dr. Lori Stevic-Rust

 

Dr. Lori Stevic-Rust has a doctoral degree in psychology.  She has worked in the field of clinical health psychology for twenty-eight years serving as the current medical director for senior services for an acute care facility and a national consultant for dementia services and care to numerous post acute care organizations. 

She is the President of the board for the Lake County Council on Aging and the advisory board for the Alzheimer Association and the Center for Dialysis Care.  She is the founder and president for a non-profit foundation that supports intergenerational programs in senior communities.

Dr. Stevic-Rust has been a regular on air TV consultant and contributor on psychological topics, hosted a cable talk show entitled Best of Health TV and has contributed to Women’s World and Fitness Magazines.

She is the author of several books including Greedy for Life, and Put on Your Big-Girl Shoes: Stepping into Courage, Resilience and Gratitude.  She is the author of the Dr. Lori column that appears in Cleveland Business Connects magazine and the national PS Magazine and is a regular blogger for the Huffington Post and appears on Huff-Live.

 She has been recognized as a Woman of Achievement by the YWCA and the Professional Advocacy Award by the Consortium Against the Exploitation and Abuse of Seniors. She has been inducted into the KSU Hall of Fame—Distinguished Alumni. She volunteers her time advocating for the protection of seniors and mentoring women who have been victims of abuse, exploitation and violence to help them discover their strength.
