{"id":4679,"date":"2020-04-01T06:00:50","date_gmt":"2020-04-01T06:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cathybiase.com\/?p=4679"},"modified":"2020-03-30T19:38:04","modified_gmt":"2020-03-30T19:38:04","slug":"neutropenia-a-common-side-effect-of-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cathybiase.com\/index.php\/2020\/04\/01\/neutropenia-a-common-side-effect-of-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"Neutropenia:  A Common Side Effect of Cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell and an extremely important part of our immune system as they help our body to fight infection.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Neutropenia<\/strong><\/em> is a condition where a person has an abnormally low concentration of neutrophils.<\/p>\n<p>People who have neutropenia have a higher risk of getting serious infections because they do not have enough neutrophils to fight off invading and harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi.<\/p>\n<p>Cancer patients who are receiving treatment can be at risk of neutropenia. Neutrophils are made in the bone marrow and cancer treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy can affect a patient&#8217;s bone health thus impacting neutrophil production. Neutropenia is also a common side effect in people with leukemia and can also be caused by solid tumour malignancies if they infiltrate the bone marrow.<\/p>\n<p>Neutropenia is diagnosed by a routine complete blood count (CBC).<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #386c9a;\">Symptoms of Neutropenia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cathybiase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/thermometer-161173_640.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4691 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/cathybiase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/thermometer-161173_640.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"136\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The following are common signs of neutropenia:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A fever<\/li>\n<li>Chills or sweating<\/li>\n<li>Sore throat, sores in the mouth<\/li>\n<li>Abdominal pain<\/li>\n<li>Pain near the anus<\/li>\n<li>Pain or burning when urinating, or urinating often<\/li>\n<li>A cough or shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Any redness, swelling, or pain (especially around a cut, wound, or catheter)<\/li>\n<li>Unusual vaginal discharge or itching<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #386c9a;\">Allopathic Management of Neutropenia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The treatment of neutropenia depends on its cause and severity. In some cases cancer treatment may be suspended until neutrophil count rises to an adequate level.<\/p>\n<p>Patients may be given medication to help bone marrow regenerate new neutrophils.<\/p>\n<p>And in cases where a disease has caused the drop in neutrophils, treatment of the disease will occur.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #386c9a;\">How Can You Support Your Immune System If You Are At Risk of Neutropenia?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #9dbfad;\">Eat a healthy diet<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Protein is the building block for the immune system. Foods such as eggs, quinoa and<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 lean white meat are good sources<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Zinc is a strong immune booster. Foods rich in zinc include pumpkin seeds, shellfish and<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 beans<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Omega\u20103 fatty acids increase phagocyte activity. Phagocytes are white blood cells that<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 consume bacteria. Foods include flax seeds, wild caught salmon and chia seeds<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Folate increases neutrophil count.
