{"id":4037,"date":"2019-06-01T07:00:03","date_gmt":"2019-06-01T12:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cathybiase.com\/?p=4037"},"modified":"2019-06-01T07:00:03","modified_gmt":"2019-06-01T12:00:03","slug":"what-is-a-probiotic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cathybiase.com\/index.php\/2019\/06\/01\/what-is-a-probiotic\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a probiotic?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Probiotics have become a common supplement in many people\u2019s daily health plan.\u00a0 But what exactly are probiotics?\u00a0 What are their benefits and how do we know which one to choose?<\/p>\n<p>The term probiotic is derived from the Greek language meaning \u201cfor life\u201d but for our purposes I will use the definition as per the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n<p>WHO defines probiotics as:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For clarification, \u2018live micro organisms\u2019 are beneficial bacteria. \u2018The host\u2019 is you.<\/p>\n<p>Now what exactly qualifies as live also needs to be clarified. In a scientific space, \u2018live\u2019 refers to \u2018survivability\u2019.\u00a0 Survivability through the harsh environment of the stomach, through the small intestine and in to the colon.<\/p>\n<p>Of great importance also, is the fact that the beneficial bacteria that we consume when taking probiotics do not colonize in the gut.\u00a0 They confer their health benefits but within days of stopping use, the probiotic it is no longer found in the gut. This means that these bacteria are transient.<\/p>\n<h4>Benefits of Probiotics<\/h4>\n<p>The studied benefits of probiotic are many.\u00a0 There is strong and increasing evidence supporting beneficial effects of probiotics to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>improvement of intestinal health<\/li>\n<li>enhancement immune response<\/li>\n<li>reduce levels of serum cholesterol<\/li>\n<li>prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea<\/li>\n<li>cancer prevention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Within the cancer sphere, the exact mechanisms are under investigation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>studies have demonstrated that certain members of <em>Lactobacillus<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Bifidobacterium<\/em> spp. decrease the levels of carcinogenetic enzymes produced by colonic flora through normalization of intestinal permeability and microflora balance as well as production of anti-mutagenic organic acids and enhancement of the host&#8217;s immune system.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In vitro and in vivo studies have indicated that probiotic bacteria might reduce the risk, incidence and number of tumours of the colon, liver and bladder.<\/p>\n<p>Now if you have taken the foray in to the world of probiotic supplements it can be a confusing arena.<\/p>\n<p>First let\u2019s take a look at the naming of probiotics.<\/p>\n<p>Probiotics are named according to Genus, Species and Strain.\u00a0 In this example Lactobacillus Gasseri M58820, \u201c<em>Lactobacillus<\/em>\u201d is the genus, \u201c<em>Gasseri\u201d<\/em> is the species and \u201c<em>M58820\u201d <\/em>is the strain.\u00a0 This is commonly abbreviated to L. Gasseri M58820.<\/p>\n<p>Now that we have naming aced let\u2019s consider what goes in to you purchasing the right probiotic.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">3 Questions to Ask When Choosing Your Probiotic<\/h3>\n<h4><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cathybiase.com\/?attachment_id=4042\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4042\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4042 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/cathybiase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/question-mark-2110767_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"127\" \/><\/a>What are you taking your probiotic for? \u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Different probiotics will be beneficial for different health conditions.\u00a0 In one study for example a group of people who took a combination of <em>Lactobacillus gasseri <\/em>KS-13, <em>Bifidobacterium bifidum <\/em>G9-1 and\u00a0<em>Bifidobacterium longum <\/em>MM-2\u00a0showed decreased inflammatory markers after 3 weeks of use.<\/p>\n<p>Determine the health reason that you want to take a probiotic for and research the strains best suited to help you.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Is the supplement company reputable?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>There are many reputable supplement companies with good quality probiotic products.\u00a0 Some offer many strains of bacteria in their supplements.\u00a0 Some may offer single strains.\u00a0 Some companies offer both.\u00a0 Many are research backed and offer novel delivery methods.<\/p>\n<p>Check out the company. Read their research and settle upon a company that resonates with you.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cathybiase.com\/?attachment_id=4045\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4045\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4045 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/cathybiase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/books-441866_640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"129\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Is the strength appropriate for the strains used?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The strength of a probiotic is the number of Colony Forming Units or CFU\u2019s found on the label<\/p>\n<p>Some probiotics may be effective at dosages of 1\u20132 billion CFU per day, while others may require at least 20 billion CFU to achieve the desired effects.<\/p>\n<p>The number of colony forming units that you need really depends on what you are using the probiotic for.<\/p>\n<p>For general good health, experts recommend between 6 to 10 billion CFU\u2019s each day.<\/p>\n<p>For minor health problems 20 to 30 billion may be adequate.<\/p>\n<p>For more serious health problems, professionals may recommend higher doses.
