Situated on the left side of our body and above our stomach, our spleen acts as both a storage reservoir and a filtration system for our blood stream, helping to remove harmful bacteria and viruses before they can do us damage.<\/p>\n<p>In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) a key mechanism of supporting our spleen is avoiding cooling foods and beverages and consuming warming ones. \u00a0Added to this is the belief that sweetness from <em>whole foods<\/em> is also supportive. \u00a0Sugary processed foods absolutely do not benefit us in any way!<\/p>\n<p>The 2 key ingredients in this Butternut Squash soup support our spleen with warmth and sweetness. \u00a0Warmth comes not only from the temperature of the soup but also by the addition of ginger. \u00a0Ginger is a warming spice. \u00a0Butternut squash is a complex carbohydrate on the sweeter spectrum of taste as you will experience with this soup.<\/p>\n<p>Fall is the perfect time to enjoy this recipe and give a little love to your spleen!<\/p>\n<p><em>(A side note for this recipe. \u00a0I love the taste of ginger and it comes shining through with the added amount of 1 Tablespoon. \u00a0If you are more towards the shy end of your ginger flavouring reduce the amount by half.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cathybiase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/squash2.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1245 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cathybiase.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/squash2.jpg\" alt=\"squash2\" width=\"268\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Butternut Squash Soup<\/h3>\n<div id=\"servings-container\">\n<div class=\"recipe__servings\">\n<div class=\"mini-islet mini-islet--peninsula\">\n<h5 class=\"strong\">6 Servings<\/h5>\n<h4 class=\"strong\">Ingredients<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"ingredients-container\">\n<div class=\"recipe__ingredients\">\n<div class=\"mini-islet mini-islet--peninsula\">\n<ul class=\"recipe__ingredients-list\">\n<li>1 Butternut Squash cut lengthwise and seeds removed<\/li>\n<li>1 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"recipe__ingredients--quantitative\">3 l<\/span><span class=\"recipe__ingredients--qualitative\">eeks (Diced)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"recipe__ingredients--quantitative\">3 g<\/span><span class=\"recipe__ingredients--qualitative\">arlic cloves (chopped)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"recipe__ingredients--quantitative\">1 tsp\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"recipe__ingredients--qualitative\">Sea Salt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"recipe__ingredients--quantitative\">1 Tbsp f<\/span><span class=\"recipe__ingredients--qualitative\">resh ginger (about \u00a03\/4 of an inch)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"recipe__ingredients--quantitative\">4 cups o<\/span><span class=\"recipe__ingredients--qualitative\">rganic vegetable broth<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"recipe__ingredients--quantitative\">1\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"recipe__ingredients--qualitative\">pinch of Chili flakes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"strong\">Directions<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Preheat oven to 180C or 350F.<\/li>\n<li>Bake squash until tender, approximately 40 minutes. \u00a0Let cool and remove skin.<\/li>\n<li>Put olive oil in to your pot and add leeks, garlic and salt. \u00a0Sautee until tender.<\/li>\n<li>Add squash, ginger and chili flakes to pot along with vegetable broth. \u00a0Simmer for 5 minutes<\/li>\n<li>Puree soup with hand held blender or in a stand up blender. \u00a0Return to heat and cook on low heat for 10 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Serve when done.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Gut Health is key to good health.
